Mary Southall Obituary

Mary Louise Goodman Southall died peacefully at the Always in Grace Assisted Living of Havre de Grace on Monday, October 1, 2018. Mary Lou was 89 years old, the second of two daughters born to Carl and Theresa Graybeal Goodman. Mary Lou was raised in the town of Port Deposit, MD, and was a graduate of the former Jacob Tome Institute of Port Deposit, MD, Class of 1946.

Mary Lou learned to swim in the Susquehanna River and once rode a bicycle across the double-decker bridge to see a movie in Havre de Grace when it only cost a nickel.

Mary Lou went on to Temple University and then to the University of Maryland where she graduated as a Lab Technician. She went on to work at the Harford Memorial Hospital of Havre de Grace for a career that spanned 25 years.

She met Herbert (Sonny) Southall on a blind date and they were married on March 31, 1950, a union that lasted over 65 years.

Dad and Mom were always up for an adventure. They had a boat they kept at the yacht basin for years and they would always be out water skiing or just cruising. With their many travel trailers they crossed the United States four times. In the winter they would spend a month in Florida visiting with their daughter and her family. Over the years they traveled with family to Maine and Tennessee.

They both loved sports and would follow the Baltimore Colts wherever they played. They attended the first and third Super Bowls in Miami.

Mary Lou and Sonny raised five children putting them all through college. She is survived by her children, Roger A. Southall, Sr., and wife, Beverly, Janet L. Southall, Shirley T. Morse and husband, Don, and Linda S. Barton; grandchildren, Ruth L. Ventela, Roger Southall, Jr., Donny Morse, Casey Schmiedel, Jason, Jeremy, and Joshua Wilson, Natalie and Jeffery Barton; ten great grandchildren, Hannah Ventela, Caden and Madison Southall, Hannah Lynn and Gracie Lee Morse, Jason, Jr., Jaden, Jaxon and Kennedi Wilson, and Gavin Schmiedel; sister, Edith Foland and sister-in-law, Peggy Scholl and husband, Wilbur.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert (Sonny) Southall, Jr., and daughter, Joann Sarah Southall Wilson.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Brightview Assisted Living and the Always in Grace Assisted Living for making Mom’s life comfortable over the last five years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Tome School Alumni Fund or to the Grace United Methodist Church in care of Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, P.A., P.O. Box 766, Perryville, MD 21903-0766.
