Edna Marie Hayes was born March 31, 1920 in Volney, VA to John and Delter Sanders. She was the middle child of eleven children. She always maintained a close relationship with her siblings and remained the sole survivor. Brothers were Howard, Paul, Albert, Estel, and Fielden Sanders. Sisters were Hazel, Alma, May, and Ruby.

Marie was married to Clarence H. Hayes for 61 years. They had a daughter, Shirley Frances Carroll, and a son, Robert Dean Hayes who died in infancy.

In the 40’s they worked in ammunition plants in Elkton, MD during WW II and the Korean War. Marie also worked as a secretary at the Ordnance School at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Aberdeen, MD. Later they became proprietors of two local businesses. They lived on Tydings Road for several years until retiring to Florida for 13 glorious years. Eventually, they moved back to Harford County for the duration of their lives.

Marie has been widowed for 20 years but maintained her independence while living at Bayland Condominiums. She enjoyed the camaraderie of good neighbors. She was an avid reader with interests that included walking, traveling, and flower gardening. She was a member of Carmel Primitive Baptist Church of Fountain Green, MD. Marie was happy to be a member of the Young at Heart Senior Club.

Marie adored her 5 grandchildren, Walter E. Carroll III, Christopher Carroll, David Carroll, Sandy (Carroll) Caston, and Joy (Carroll) Meeks; 8 great grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren. She was notorious for spreading her “Nanny dust” on them and they reciprocated her love touches. She had undying affection for her nieces and nephews. She was optimistic and a great encourager and had abundant wisdom. She proclaimed, “I have never seen a stranger”. She weathered the storms of life with courage, tenacity and perseverance, which was evidence of her deep faith in God and love for others.
