Anthony "Tony" Peter Gerst

Anthony “Tony” Peter Gerst, 79, of Perryville, MD, passed away suddenly Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at the Christiana Care Union Hospital in Elkton, MD. Born February 6, 1946 in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Andrew and Imogene (nee Harrison) Gerst.

In addition to his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, Tony’s greatest accomplishments were working for Kopper’s (United Container) in Glen Arm, MD, where he was a member of the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers (IAM) and retired after 35 years of service. He later built, owned, and operated Box Car Avenue Ice Cream Shop in Perryville. Tony was also a member of the Perryville Lions Club, Moose Lodge No. 1242, and the Ranger Social Club.

Tony is survived by his longtime partner, Margaret Scott Barrow; daughter, Bridget Ann Koszyk and husband, Francis; son, Mark Anthony Gerst and wife, Theresa; daughter, Kimberly Denise Spurrier; and son, Timothy Franklin Gerst and wife, Stacy; grandchildren, Christopher Sutherland, Darren Davis, Jr, Heather Davis, Kayla Wymer, Kyle Gerst, Kolton Nullmeyer, London Gerst, and Kennedy Gerst; and great-grandchildren, Jordan Teasley, Kyrsten Bennett, Jeremiah Davis, Ella Sutherland, Charlie Davis and Anthony Davis.

In addition to his parents, Tony was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Eric Spurrier; and brothers, Charles Watkins and John Watkins.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contribution made in Tony’s honor to the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, or the American Lung Association in care of Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, P.A., P.O. Box 766, Perryville, MD 21903-0766.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, March 1, 2025, 1 PM, at the Perryville Methodist Church, 301 Susquehanna Avenue, Perryville, MD. Following the service, a luncheon will be held at the American Legion, Susquehanna Post No. 135, 300 Cherry Street, Perryville, MD.
