Bernard L. McKay, born February 16, 1929 in Cambridge, Ohio, passed peacefully to the sounds of Sinatra on January 1, 2015 in the company of family and friends. Born to parents, Peter and Nancy McKay, Bernard found his way to Perryville through his brother, Pete. In doing so, he met the love of his life, Beverly Neff, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his son, Rhett McKay (Heather), his daughter, Michele McKay, and his grandson, Hunter McKay. He also was preceded by his son, Michael David McKay.
“Uncle Bernie” was well loved and is survived by his nieces: Sandra, Mary Jo, LeAnne, Sharon, Nancy, Peggy, Mary Sue, Amy, Shelby, Shellie, and Ashli. His surviving nephews: Steve, Randy, Ricky, Mark, Chuck, David, Joe, and Michael. He is survived by many great-nieces and great-nephews that he loved with his whole heart. Also, he is survived by his godson, Alan Richard Grace, and his mother and great friend, Connie Reynolds Grace.
Bernard was the baby brother to John McKay, Pete McKay, Suzanne Longenbaker, and Mary Way and is the last to join them in heaven.
Bernie was a special man who brought joy to all who knew him. He provided for his family, working and enjoying being active into his 70’s. His ability to fix just about anything made him popular within the family and to others. He played basketball well into his 60’s, and with those much younger, who would argue to pick him first. He may have been soft spoken, but when he sang, it was everyone else who became quiet. His later years were some of his happiest as he dressed in his tuxedo and sang for the enjoyment of others. “Perryville’s Frankie” became a hot commodity – but his truest and biggest fan was his loving wife, Bev. She encouraged him to share his talents, having been fortunate to hear him at home – and how great it was.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Memorial for Bernard and to celebrate his life on Sunday, January 18, 2015 beginning at 3:00 pm at the American Legion Post 135, 300 Cherry Street, Perryville, MD 21903.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Asbury United Methodist Church or the Perryville United Methodist Church in care of Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, P.A., P.O. Box 766, Perryville, MD 21903-0766.
