Betty Jane (Moore) Thompson died February 3, 2017 at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, MD following a short illness. She was 88 years old.
Born September 21, 1928 in Wilmington, DE, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Frances Moore. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Sterling Moore and her son, Gary W. Thompson.
Betty was a 1946 graduate of the Pierre S. DuPont High School in Wilmington, DE. She graduated from the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Wilmington, DE in 1949. Four months late she married her husband of 67 years, Samuel “Sid” Cecil Thompson Jr. They made their home of more than six decades in Perryville, MD. Betty, who was very proud of her nursing vocation, retired from Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace, MD following a rewarding career.
Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church of Perryville, MD, a member of a Perryville-based card club and volunteered many years assisting the Perryville Lions Club. She traveled throughout North America and to China to attend functions for the Lions Club with her husband, who was a past District Governor. She enjoyed spending time with family, particularly her grandchildren. Betty especially enjoyed hosting functions for family and friends at her Susquehanna River-front pavilion.
In addition to her husband, Betty is survived by her brother, Charles Moore; her son Samuel R. Thompson and his wife, Kim; her son Edward A. Thompson and his wife, Sharon; her son, Jeffrey W. Thompson; her daughter, Jane F. DeCourcey and her husband Jim; and her daughter-in-law Debbie Thompson. Betty is also survived by six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the First Baptist Church of Perryville, 4800 Pulaski Highway, Perryville, MD between 10 a.m. and noon Thursday, February 9, 2017; a memorial service will follow at noon.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Cecil College Foundation to support a nursing student scholarship in Betty’s memory.
