Carleton Wesley Brown, 94 yrs, of Perryville, MD, died Thursday, January 31, 2013 at his residence. Born September 28, 1918 in Malden, MA, he was a son of the late Paul Brigden and Jessie Staniford Brown. Mr. Brown graduated from the University of New Hampshire and Boston University School of Social Work. He came to Maryland in 1946 to serve as Casework Supervisor at the Prisoners Aid Association of Maryland. His move to Cecil County in 1953 was to help establish the out-placement program at Perry Point Veterans Hospital, at which he worked for 30 years. Mr. Brown became involved in the Perryville community with the Friends of Rogers Tavern, the Tricentennial celebration, the Holly Tree Committee, the Perryville Lions Club (President 1968-1969) and the Presbyterian Church where he became an Elder and served as Treasurer and Secretary for the remainder of his life. He was Past President of Col. Henry Hollingsworth Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, Past President of the Susquehanna Chapter, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and Past President of the Cecil County Association for Retarded Children. Immediately after retiring from Perry Point in 1984, Mr. Brown became a volunteer for the Cecil County Training Center for the Handicapped, driving its van for an entire year. The Training Center is now part of the Bayside Community Network, on which he served on the Board of Directors. In addition, a group home was named in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Brown by the Bayside Community Network. Mr. Brown also volunteered in medical transportation for the Department of Social Services and the Department of Aging from 1986 until May, 2000. He was Treasurer for the Commission on Aging for several years. Mr. Brown enjoyed expressing himself by writing letters published in The Cecil Whig and The Baltimore Sun, most often on environmental and population subjects. Several times the Editor of The Sun assigned artists to illustrate the letters. Mr. Brown is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Avis Cochrane Brown, son, David R. Brown, daughter, Nancy B. DiAngelo and husband, Thomas, granddaughter, Mary DiAngelo, all of Perryville. Box 766, Perryville, MD 21903-0766. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, February 23, 2013, 11 AM, at the Perryville Presbyterian Church, Perryville, MD.
