David R. Barr, Jr.

End of Watch:  Captain David R. Barr, Jr. Captain David R. Barr, Jr., 64, a veteran Cecil County Firefighter, lost his life in the line of duty while on a call with the Community Fire Company of Perryville.  The Captain was on-the-job at an accident on Route 40 in Perryville on October 25, 2013, when he was struck by an automobile.  He succumbed to his injuries on November 7, 2013. The dedicated public servant was born in Havre de Grace on November 30, 1948, the son of Emma DeMarco Barr and David Roland Barr of Port Deposit.  He leaves behind his wife Donna Bannon Barr and two sons John R. of Port Deposit, and David R. III of Bel Air.  He is also survived by his brother Edward E. Barr of Perryville and brothers-in-law Norman J. Bannon, III and Andrew M. Bannon of Perryville, as well as seven grandchildren. The career firefighter devoted his life to the fire service and to serving the citizens of Cecil County.  Whenever there was an emergency or something needed to be done in the firehouse, he was one of the first to volunteer and was often tapped to lead important functions.  He joined the Water Witch Fire Company of Port Deposit as a teenager, where he served in many capacities.  Professionally he worked as a federal fire fighter, serving 34 years at the Perry Point Veterans Hospital, retiring from government service with the rank of Lieutenant.  In 2000 he joined the Community Fire Company of Perryville and was serving there as a Captain when he answered the final call. He was also an active member of the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 135, where he served as squadron commander. It is with deep regret that the members of the fire, rescue and EMS community say a final goodbye to one of our own, a dedicated and respected colleague who has answered the final call.  He will be remembered as a man who loved his work, the fire service, the community, and his family. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Community Fire Company of Perryville, National Fallen Firefighters Foundation or Children’s Legacy Network, in care of Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, P.A., P.O. Box 766, Perryville, MD  21903-0766. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 16, 11 a.m., at the Minker Banquet Hall, Community Fire Company of Perryville, MD, Inc., 920 Principio Furnace Road, Perryville, MD 21903.  Friends may call Friday, November 15, 1 p.m. until 4 p.m and 7 p.m. until 9 p.m., at the fire station.  The internment, with full fire service honors, will be in West Nottingham Cemetery, Colora, MD. Arrangements By Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, P.A., Perryvile, MD.
