Douglas Brady Mcglothlin, Sr.

Douglas Brady McGlothlin, Sr., lover of family, industrious businessman, and larger-than-life personality, died at his home in Conowingo, on June 4. He was 81. Following an auto accident, which shattered his hip in mid-2014, his health had been in gradual decline. Doug was born on February 15, 1935 in Conowingo, to his father, Brady McGlothlin, a carpenter, and his mother, Estella Graybeal McGlothlin, a homemaker. He attended grade school at the one-room Colora School House and was a member of the Rising Sun High School Class of 1953. In 1951, Doug married Elinor Jean Copenhaver, and the two would remain together until her death in 2004. In his early career, Doug spent 23 years with the HarbisonWalker Refractories Company, serving in the position of Production Manager, overseeing the manufacture of steel kiln bricks. Doug was a tireless worker and lifelong entrepreneur, and so in addition to his work at the brick factory, in off-hours, he pursued a range of business ventures, including real estate flipping, cattle trading, and growing Christmas trees, as well as establishing and operating three community residence homes for disabled veterans. In 1964, Doug and his wife, Jean, purchased and moved onto the Octoraro Hills farm property in Conowingo. His three children would eventually build their own homes on this property and raise their own families in close proximity to one another. Doug once remarked that enabling his family to live together in a closeknit, sharing environment, which resulted in strong family bonding, was the proudest accomplishment of his life. Doug committed to real estate full-time in 1980, and over the next twenty years, he and his wife Jean enjoyed a fruitful and personally rewarding career in real estate sales and development. The outgoing, gifted communicator Doug found his calling as an award-winning salesman, and Jean complemented his skill-set with her attention to detail. Through their work together, they traveled extensively and made many long-lasting friendships. By 2000, Doug and his wife had mostly retired from the real estate business and they turned their attention to realizing their dream of building a home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, a favorite annual family vacation destination from years past. Following Jean’s death in 2004, Doug became very involved with his growing family, spending as much time as he could with children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, and remained active in his church community and with charity endeavors. Doug was a member of Conowingo Baptist Church, and also attended Janes United Methodist Church in Rising Sun, MD, and Green Mountain Baptist Church in Meadows of Dan, VA. He is survived by his son, Doug McGlothlin, Jr. and his wife, Ruth; daughter, Kelly Benjamin and her husband Gary; daughter-in-law, Carlene McGlothlin; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and sisters, Vivian Sheets and Virginia Seamster. He is preceded in death by his son, John McGlothlin, and brothers, Ralph and William. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, June 7, from 6-8 PM, at Conowingo Baptist Church, 151 Rock Springs Rd., Conowingo, MD 21918, and the funeral service will be held the following day, on Wednesday, June 8, at 2 PM, also at Conowingo Baptist Church, with visitation one hour prior.
