Earl Rex “Mose” Gilley, 74, of Colora, Maryland, passed away suddenly at his home on Thursday, September 4, 2014. He was born on March 3, 1940 in Lansing, North Carolina to Ruth Miller Gilley and Paul Joseph Gilley. The family moved to Cecil County when he was three.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Paula Hopkins Gilley, and their triplet daughters, Audra Morris and her husband, Keith Morris, of Colora, Paula Lucas and her husband, Bart Lucas of Rising Sun, and Briana Unger and her husband, Robert Unger, of Colora. “Mose” aka “Pop-pop” has six grandchildren, Asher, Aidan, & Emma Sloman, Peyton Saponaro, Seth Morris, and Chase Lucas, whom he delighted in and was so hopeful to watch grow into young men and women. He is survived by his brother, Joseph Gerald Gilley, and his wife, Joan, of Colora, and their three sons, Mark, David, & Jeffrey.
He attended the Jacob Tome Institute (Tome School) in Port Deposit, Maryland and joined the Air Force in 1959. He was employed at Aberdeen Proving Ground as a heavy equipment mechanic and retired after 34 years of service.
Mose was extremely loving and proud of his three daughters, enjoyed his family and wanted them around him all the time. He liked to give to his sons-in-law things he thought they would like. He joked and laughed with them and close family friends. He loved his brother, Zeke, dearly and said they never had a disagreement. He loved his pets, Mittens and Hank. He liked to fish. He spent many hours discussing sports, particularly the Colts, Orioles, and the Ravens, but football in general. He liked NASCAR racing. But most of all he talked about his 72 Duster and his 95 Ford pickup.
There will be a Celebration of His Life on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, 1713 Liberty Grove Road, Colora, Maryland 21917. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until 12:00 noon, with service to follow. Interment will be private at a later time with the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Wounded Warriors or Ray of Hope Mission Center. Donations can be sent to Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, P.A., P.O. Box 766, Perryville, MD 21903-0766.
