Eleanor May Abrahams

On Friday, March 6, 2026, Eleanor May Abrahams took her final breaths in the morning hours in the comfort of her Port Deposit home. It was in this same home that she entered the world on Monday, October 8, 1934 - more than 91 years ago - to the delight of her parents, Woodward Abrahams and Martha Currier Abrahams.

Known to take shopping trips to Baltimore from time to time, it would have been fair to assume that Eleanor had planned and saved accordingly. Some might attribute that assumption to shrewdness, while others might call it a reflection of work ethic, but a blend of the two is likely closer to the truth. It may also help explain Eleanor’s forty-two-year career, which began at Cecil National Bank in Port Deposit and culminated with her retirement as an assistant manager through M&T Bank.

Although Eleanor’s time here began and ended on days that spanned a given work week, it was on weekends that she made Port Deposit her playground. In decades past, she could likely be found dancing along the river shore after a family picnic on the local island; or perhaps she might be seen bypassing the ticket line with her friends at the local movie theater run by her father, Woodward. And on Sundays, she could most assuredly be spotted at Tome Memorial Methodist Church, where she was a lifelong member.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her brothers, Wilson, Rodney, and Norman, as well as her sister, Audrey. As the last member of one of the oldest families in Port Deposit, Eleanor’s life punctuates the significance of being grounded by a familial legacy that parallels the inception of a town - locally navigating the comings and goings of trends and eras with the wisdom that constancy is necessarily there amidst whatever may be changing over time.
