Celebrating the Life of Eleanor "Pee Wee" Gaylord

Eleanor Jane Gaylord affectionately known as “Pee Wee” the oldest child of the late Daniel William Griffin Sr., and Lenabel Griffin, was born on 7 February 1938 in Harford Memorial Hospital, Havre de Grace, Maryland. She departed this life on Tuesday, 18 June 2024 peacefully at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

A Life Filled with Love and Service

From a tender age, Pee Wee displayed a passion for serving others. Her nurturing nature manifested in countless ways, from the simple joy of playing with paper dolls with her friend Patricia Taylor to the dedication she demonstrated through piano lessons with Rudy Barnes. Her early years were also filled with cherished memories of summer camp with her beloved Grandparents Bella and Leon Bond, where she found joy in the companionship of others and discovered the profound satisfaction of giving back to her community.

A Spirit of Generosity and Community

Pee Wee's commitment to service extended beyond her childhood. She found solace and purpose in contributing to the well-being of those around her. Countless hours were spent at Aunt Essie's snack bar, where she fostered connections and shared laughter with her community. Her participation in church activities was a testament to her deep faith and her dedication to supporting her church family. Pee Wee'sunwavering belief in the power of kindness and the importance of community shaped her life and made a lasting impact on those who knew her. Educational Journey and Early Career

Pee Wee's educational journey began at Port Deposit Colored School, where she spent her formative years until the fifth grade. She excelled in academics and demonstrated a keen interest in learning. As a teenager, she discovered a passion for basketball, showcasing her athletic talent as a forward for Carver High School. Pee Wee's determination extended beyond the court, as she actively sought opportunities to contribute to her family's well-being. She held various jobs, including working as a cook at Winchesters and Bainbridge, demonstrating her dedication and resourcefulness.

A Lifelong Commitment to Service

Pee Wee's commitment to serving others continued throughout her life. After completing her education, she embarked on a fulfilling career in dietetics at Perry Point, Maryland. For over 25 years, she dedicated herself to improving the lives of others, contributing her expertise and compassion to those in her care. Her dedication to her profession reflected her unwavering belief in the importance of supporting her community and making a positive difference in the lives of those around her.

Finding Faith and Purpose

At the young age of 12, Pee Wee embraced faith and found solace in the teachings of Christ. She became anactive member of Bethel AME Church, where she participated in Sunday School and sought spiritual guidance. Pee Wee's faith was a source of strength and guidance throughout her life, providing her with a sense of purpose and direction. Her commitment to her church and her unwavering belief in God's love for all were integral parts of her identity.

A Dedicated Steward and Gospel Singer

Pee Wee's deep faith and commitment to her church led her to serve as a Stewardess at Bethel AME. She followed in the footsteps of her grandmother, who had served in the same role, and under her guidance, honed her skills and embraced the responsibilities of this spiritual position. Pee Wee's dedication to serving her church and her community was a testament to her character and her unwavering belief in the power of faith. Her beautiful voice also found expression in the church choir, where she sang alongside Kenneth Stewart's gospel choir, sharing her musical talent with the congregation.

Honoring Her Memory

Pee Wee leaves behind a rich legacy of love and service, a testament to her incredible life. She is survived by four generations of family, former husband and friend Conrad Gaylord, son Donald Griffin (Francine), daughters, Karen Gassaway (Kendall), Kolene Gaylord, sons, Conrad Gaylord (Jodi), and Kevin Gaylord (Sharon) daughter, Kristina Gaylord. Brothers, Daniel Griffin (Elaine) Bernard Griffin (Shenina) Gregory Griffin; sisters, Rosina Carey,(the late Thomas Carey Sr.) Joyce Johnson, Marjorie Govans, Cheryl Griffin, and Robin Lucas-Pratt (the late James Lucas-Pratt), Gene Gaylord, Florence Marshall. She is also survived by eighteen grandchildren, forty-three great-grandchildren, 2 great great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, and nephews and her long time neighbor, friends Mrs. Margaret Berry

and Evelyn Jordan. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Bethel AME church, Port Deposit in her memory. She was preceded in death by her brother Ralph Ernest Griffin.

Pee Wee will be remembered for her kind heart, her infectious smile, and her unwavering commitment to helping others. She touched the lives of all who knew her, leaving an impression of warmth, generosity, and love. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, June 29, 2024, 11 AM, at the Rising Sun Church of the Nazarene of Rising Sun, MD. Visitation for family and friends will be held Saturday, June 29, 2024, 9 AM until 11 AM, at the church prior to the funeral service. Interment will be in Berkley Cemetery, Darlington, MD.
