Grace H Smith

Grace H. Smith, 100 yrs, of Charlestown, MD, died Friday, July 8, 2011, in Union Hospital of Cecil County, Elkton, MD. Born July 2, 1911, in Lancaster, PA, she was a daughter of the late Arthur Detz Gehr and Mary Elliott Harnish. Grace was a 1929 graduate of Stevens High School, Lancaster, PA. She worked in Accounting at Armstrong in Lancaster until her marriage to Howard A. Smith in October 1933. After being widowed in 1966, Grace worked at Union Hospital of Elkton, MD, in Medical Records until her retirement. Grace was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, Charlestown, MD; Order of the Eastern Star, Elkton Chapter; and Charter Member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Charlestown Fire Company. Grace also served two terms as the first female Town Commissioner of Charlestown, MD. Grace is survived by her children; Nancy S. Bowles, Charlestown, MD; James A. Smith, Elkton, MD; William E. Smith, Charlestown, MD; Richard A. Smith, Mechanicsville, MD; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, July 14, 2011, 11 AM, at the Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, P.A., Perryville, MD.  Visitation for family and friends will be held Wednesday, July 13, 2011, 7-9 PM, at the funeral home.  Pastor Mary Browne of St. John’s United Methodist Church of Charlestown, MD, will officiate.  Interment will be in Principio Cemetery, Perryville, MD.
