Gregory Levon Griffin, Sr., 73, departed this life on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at Elkton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Elkton, MD, surrounded by his loved ones. Gregory was born January 30, 1952, in Elkton, MD, to Daniel Griffin, Sr., and Lenabel Bond Griffin who have both since gone home to Glory.
During his early school years, he attended Port Deposit Elementary before graduating from Perryville High School in 1971.
Gregory loved sports, both as a participant and a fan, as he enjoyed playing soccer and basketball while in high school. He later played softball for several teams throughout Maryland and Delaware where he won the respect and admiration of his team members and the community that supported him. We often watched him play and loved to hear the stories of how he batted single handedly to knock the ball over the fence.
Gregory was employed at Pirelli’s in Elkton and then later Manhattan Electric in New Jersey. He also subcontracted as a concrete finisher for Vernon Smith.
Gregory was baptized on May 10, 2008, under Rev. Michael Thompson and became a member of Bethel AME in Port Deposit, MD. He quickly acted as a “Foot Soldier for the Lord” serving as a trustee, and he took pride in that position as he was always willing to assist even when his health declined. He also loved to cook for the monthly dinners at the church hall, serve our customers, and made sure the distribution of meals in the community ran smoothly. Gregory also acted as a “Foreman” in the renovation of the church hall. He rolled up his sleeves and worked alongside the others. Gregory loved his church and worked as an integral member of the Body of Christ at Bethel until his recent hospitalization. We know God looks at the heart of a man, and we have no doubt Gregory is resting in the arms of Jesus.
Gregory Levon Griffin, Sr., was a beloved father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He leaves to cherish his memory sons: Gregory Jr.(Shakeda), Chicago, Illinois; Jerek Griffin, Perryville, MD; daughter: Shalena Griffin Cincinnati, Ohio; eight grandchildren: Gregory, III (Josie), Quentin (Natalie), Zion, Harley, Noah, Jordan, and Gemini Griffin, Eliana Lopez; one great grandchild: Levuela Narae Griffin; brothers: Daniel Griffin, Sr. (Elaine) Newark, DE; Bishop Dr. Bernard Griffin, Sr., (Shenina) Bolivia, North Carolina; Ralph Griffin, Sr (deceased); sisters: Eleanor Gaylord (deceased); Joyce Johnson, Aberdeen, MD, Marjorie Govans, Perryman, MD, Rosina Carey, Perryville, MD, Cheryl Griffin, Port Deposit, MD, and Robin Lucas-Pratt, Elkton, MD. He also leaves a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends he truly loved. We also want to acknowledge Perry Poist, who has been a friend of Gregory and the family since childhood. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Lenabel Griffin, brother Ralph Griffin, Sr., and sister Eleanor Gaylord.
Gregory, you had an infectious smile and laugh that we all are going to miss! As Daddy used to say “don’t say goodbye, say so long.” So long until we meet again.
On a lighter note, we know that he is in Heaven knocking the balls out of the park scoring homeruns and on the bank fishing with his father and brother.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for April 26, 2025, and the venue location will be announced. In lieu of flowers, please send love offerings to Bethel AME Port Deposit, MD, in memory of Gregory Griffin.
Lovingly submitted,
The Griffin Family
