Herbert Robbie Akins

Herbert Robbie Akins, 73 yrs, of Port Deposit, MD, died Saturday, December 31, 2011, in Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, Bel Air, MD. Born November 26, 1939, in Darlington, MD, he was a son of the late Joseph Edward and Gertrude Akins. Mr. Akins is a graduate of Central Consolidated High School of Bel Air, MD.  He loved gardening, cooking for family and friends and watching sports. Mr. Akins retired from the V.A. Medical Center, Perry Point, MD, after 27 years of service in Environmental Management.  He is also retired from the Cecil County Board of Education after 20 years of service. Mr. Akins is survived by his wife, Helen Beatrice Akins, Port Deposit, Maryland; son, Rodney Akins, Sr., and wife, Robin; daughters, Mia Cason and Roslyn Turner and husband, Billy; grandchildren, Rodney, Jr., Justin Akins, Noak Akins, Travis Johnson, Salena Cason, Jocelyn Hampton, Justine Turner, Jamar Turner, Jacoby Turner, JaVonn Turner, Gabriel Sherrod, Tiara Honesty-Moore, Tiffany Honesty-Moore; great grandsons, Jordan Gray and Michael Gray, III; Godchildren, Kevin Hockaday and wife, Tina, and Jackie Webster; brothers, Joseph Akins and wife, Eloise, Darlington, MD, and Harvey Akins, Aberdeen, MD; sisters, Esther Giles, York, PA, Margie Milburn and husband, Paul, Peach Bottom, PA, Annie Akins, Darlington, MD, Beatrice Boddy, Elkton, MD, Nancy Worthington, Havre de Grace, MD, Hazel Akins, Darlington, MD, Ruth Taylor, Havre de Grace, MD;  sisters-in law, Sarah Clark and husband, Carl, Frances Honesty, Barbara Gibbs and husband, Carlton; brothers-in-law, Samuel Banks, Jr., and wife, Shirley, Clarence Banks and wife, Elaine, Nathaniel Banks, Williams Banks; also a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. Akins was preceded in death by his son, Gary Akins; brother, William Akins; sisters, Sarah Hill, Betty Giles, Gertrude Akins, Viola Risby and Alice Harrison; and special niece, Barbara Ann Cage. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, January 6, 2012, 12 Noon, at Hosanna A.M.E. Church, 2418 Castleton Road, Darlington, MD. Visitation for family and friends will be held Friday, January 6, 2012, 10 AM until 12 Noon, at the church. Pastor Provey Powell, Jr., will officiate. Rev. John E. Brown, Jr., will assist.
