James Samuel Carson, of Havre de Grace, MD, died Tuesday, January 5, 2016, at his residence in Havre de Grace, MD. Born May 6, 1911, in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late James A. Carson and Millicent Craig Carson.
Graduated from Perry Point School, attended Jacob Tome Institute in Port Deposit and Wildwood High School in New Jersey.
Graduated from the University of Virginia in 1934 with a degree in Chemical Engineering.
Prior to joining Edgewood Arsenal he worked for A.I. DuPont in Nashville, TN, for four years and 2 years at Tubize Corporation in Rome, GA. At Edgewood he worked on the development of incendiary bombs, including Napalm, and shares a Patent for an agent for gelling gasoline or other liquid hydrocarbons to be used as an incendiary in fire bombs, flamethrowers and so forth. At the time of retirement he was Chief of the section for the detection of war gases and agents in air and water.
He was active in many civic affairs including being president of the Harford County March of Dimes and member of the Maritime Museum.
After retirement he was president, for many years of the Spinnaker Condominium Association in Ocean City, MD.
He was an active member of the Havre de Grace United Methodist Church, a life member of Havre de Grace Elks Lodge, a sixty year member of Havre de Grace Masonic Lodge, a member of the Masonic Royal Arch Chapter in Towson, MD, a life member of the University of Virginia Alumni Association and the Thomas Jefferson Society, also a member of Theta Tau, a national engineering fraternity.
He is survived by his son, Samuel Carson of Havre de Grace; daughter, June Watts and husband, Ralph, of Fairfax, VA; four grandchildren, Helen Mendez and husband, John, of Superior, CO, Jeffery Heyman and wife, Kim, of Phoenix, AZ, Christopher Carson and wife, Dana, of Abingdon, MD, and Justin Watts and wife, Lauren, of Indialantic, FL; nine great grandchildren, Julianna and Abigail Carson, Brittney, Ashley, and Carson Heyman, Lila and James Watts, Natalie and Kaitlyn Mendez; one sister, Margaret Johnson of Havre de Grace.
He was preceded in death by his wife, June Shafer Carson; daughter, Patricia Heyman; sisters, Marion Hagan, Gladys Sentman, Ruth Johnson, Betty Deans; and brothers, George, Clement, and Raymond Carson
Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, January 14, 2016, 11 AM, at Havre de Grace United Methodist Church. Visitation for family and friends will be held Wednesday, January 13, 2016, 7 PM until 9 PM, at the Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, P.A., Perryville, MD. Pastor Norman Obenshain of Havre de Grace United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be in Bel Air Memorial Gardens, Bel Air, MD.
