Leaters Gaylord, Jr., finished his course and completed his race on January 2, 2011 at the Perry Point Veterans Administration Hospital. The oldest of four children, he was born March 12, 1934, in New York City, NY, to the late Leaters Gaylord, Sr. and Margaret Haines Gaylord.
Junnie, as he was affectionately known, received his education in the Cecil County Public School System. He was a great basketball player at the George Washington Carver High School from which he graduated.
Upon completion of high school, Junnie entered the United States Air Force where he served 12 years and was honorably discharged. After he was discharged he remained in Rochester, NY, where he was employed by the Rochester Gas & Electric Company for 25 years from which he retired.
Leaters enjoyed reading, puzzles and watching sports on television. He was also a member of the Port Deposit Black Socks and played with the traveling Air Force baseball team when he served.
After many years, Leaters returned to Port Deposit where he remained until his health failed and the Lord called him home.
Very recently Leaters accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior.
Leaters is survived by his sons, Donald Griffin and wife, Fran, of North Carolina, Darryl Gaylord of Tennessee, Lionel Gaylord of Rochester, NY, Todd Gaylord of Wisconsin; eight grandchildren and great grandchildren; brothers, Conrad C. Gaylord and wife, Barbara, North East, MD, Gene O. Gaylord, Sr., and wife, Dorothy, Port Deposit, MD; sister, Florence J. Marshall and husband, Lem, of Mt. Holy, NJ; aunt and uncle, Marva Gittings and Ronald Haines; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Leaters was preceded in death by his sons, Leaters Gaylord, III, Mark Gaylord and Phillip Gaylord.
Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, January 10, 2011, 12 Noon, at the Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, P.A., Perryville, MD. Visitation for family and friends will be held Monday, January 10, 2011, 10 AM to 12 Noon, at the funeral home prior to the funeral service. Bishop Claude D. Waldon, Sr., of the Greater Faith Tabernacle, Elk Mills, MD, will officiate. Interment will be private.
