Margaret "Peggy" Pitt Bailey

Margaret “Peggy” Pitt Bailey of Rising Sun, MD, passed away peacefully at home on June 25, 2025 at the wonderfully blessed age of 104. A devoted mother, cherished family matriarch, beloved friend, and educator, Peggy touched countless lives through her unwavering dedication to teaching and guidance.

Born November 6, 1920 in Wilmington, DE, she was the daughter of the late Alice Caroline (Jackson) Pitt and Walter Dupa Pitt and was raised on a farm in Port Deposit, MD.

Peggy was educated at Jacob Tome Institute and later earned her degree from Washington College in Chestertown, MD. She began her long and impactful career in education at Elkton High School and later returned to her alma mater, Jacob Tome Institute, where she taught English and French. Peggy then joined the staff at Rising Sun High School, where she would remain until her retirement in 1984. After two decades of teaching, she became a Guidance Counselor, dedicating 41 years to the Cecil County Public School System. She took pride in the accomplishments of her former students, and always said, “They turned out to be good citizens.”

Peggy was a member of Janes Church of Rising Sun, MD, and Friends of the Rising Sun Library. She was a voracious reader and reminded others that, “First you learn to read, and then you read to learn.”

Whether it was with a listening ear, a shoulder to lean on, a helping hand, or encouraging words, Peggy received joy by helping people and sharing what she had with others. She was witty, wise, and full of life. Her family and friends were of great importance to her and she always enjoyed their company.

In addition to her parents, Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson S. Bailey, her brothers, Emerson, Donald, and Harry Pitt, and her sister, Ruth Ann Pitt Barclay. She is survived by her loving daughter, Patrice A. Bailey (Ken Brown – Kim, Drew, and Maggie Alexander), her sister, Alice Pitt Robinson, and numerous nieces, nephews and greats, all whom she dearly loved.
