Mary Elizabeth Scott went home to be with the Lord on Friday, August 14, 2015 in Union Hospital of Cecil County, Elkton, MD. She was born on January 5, 1924 in Port Deposit, MD, to Benjamin Cain and Pearline Boddy Cain. Her brothers and sisters were Estella, Lula, James, Isadora, George, Ernest (her twin), Grace, Herbert, Frances, Mildred, Roberta, Robert, and Anna.
She was educated in the Cecil County public school system. She graduated from George Washington Carver as the salutatorian. She worked briefly at the former Bainbridge Naval Training Center, and later in various homes doing housekeeping.
Mary Cain married her life partner, Cornelius Scott Sr., during a wintery blast on March 1, 1947. Their union was blessed with four children, Roberta, Cornelius Jr., Grady, and Pearl.
Mary Scott accepted our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at an early age where she practiced her discipleship at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church of Port Deposit, MD. She later joined First Baptist Church of Port Deposit, MD, where her husband became a deacon and she served as a deaconess. She was very active in the congregation working with the sunbeam children’s choir, and the youth choir. She often picked up children for choir practice and of course, her favorite activity, cleaning the church.
She loved to write plays for the children to perform. She wrote resolutions to console bereaving families. She was a Sunday School teacher and sang in the choir for all to hear her beautiful soprano voice. She put on many programs to raise funds and would recite poems from memory.
In her senior years, she joined Cokesbury First Baptist Church of Cokesbury, MD. There she became the Mother of the Church.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Roberta Scott Guary (Cpl. Robert Guary) (deceased), of Abingdon, MD, Cornelius Scott Jr. (Terri) of Elkton, MD, the Reverend D. Grady Scott (Theressa E.) of Tucson, AZ, the Reverend Pearl Scott Johnson (Rev. Grant), of Wilmington, DE; brother, Robert Cain (Betty); sister, Anna Mae Willis; 13 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cornelius Scott Sr.; and 11 sisters and brothers.
Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, August 20, 2015, 11 AM, at the Cokesbury United Methodist Church of Port Deposit, MD. Visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday, August 20, 2015, 10 AM until 11 AM, at the church prior to the funeral service. Pastor Steven L. White of the Cokesbury Baptist Church of Cokesbury, MD, will officiate. Interment will be Friday, August 21, 2015, 10 AM, in Garrison Forest Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Owings Mills, MD.
