Michael Miklas, Jr., 87, of Charlestown, Maryland passed away Friday, August 11, 2017 in Union Hospital with his entire family by his side. Born February 23, 1930 in Youngstown, Ohio, he was the son of the late Michael Miklas, Sr. and Helen Miklas.
After graduating high school Mike had a tryout with the New York Giants (MLB) and a short time later enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving honorably during the Korean War. He was a career insurance salesman, working for the Prudential Insurance Company for 13 years and then retired with AFLAC after 35 plus years of service in 2006.
Mike was also one of the founding fathers of Bethel Lutheran Church in North East, Maryland, where he taught Sunday School and was an active choir member. He also became a lay leader and choir member at St. John’s Methodist Church in Charlestown, Maryland. Mike also served as a volunteer for Gideons.
Mike was very active in the North East Little League where he served as a coach for his son’s team and was the league President for seven years. Mike loved living in Charlestown overlooking the North East River and served for several years as Fairinger of the Charlestown Colonial Fair. He was also a volunteer for Riverfest.
Mike was one of the founders and past president of the Bainbridge Naval Training Center Historical Association and museum. He was also a Mason with the Masonic Lodge in Chesapeake City, Maryland.
Mike is survived by his wife of 65 ½ years Jeanette Miklas, Charlestown, Maryland, Philip Miklas and wife Debbie, Charlestown, Maryland, Eric Miklas and wife Mindy, North East, Maryland; grandchildren Josh, Adam, Jarad, Lauren and Justin; 8 great grandchildren; and brother Myron Miklas of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, August 15, 2017, 1:00 p.m. at the Lee A. Patterson and Son Funeral Home, P.A., Perryville, Maryland. Visitation for family and friends will be held Tuesday, August 15, 2017, 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the funeral service. Pastor Jay Combs will officiate. Interment will be in Bethel Cemetery, Chesapeake City, Maryland.
