Tyrese Lakia Cason, born Tyrese Lakia Brown, entered this world on December 31, 1961, in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late Edith Mae Brown and Benjamin Thomas Brown, Sr. On Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 3:01 p.m., Tyrese was called home to eternal rest.
Tyrese grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, and was a proud graduate of Mergenthaler High School, Class of 1980. She dedicated many years of service to the University of Delaware, where she worked as a Human Resources Generalist until her retirement in June 2022.
Above all, Tyrese was an extraordinary mother. She was blessed with three children: Tyrese Lakia Harris, Candice Christina Franklin, and Darryl Antonio “DJ” Johnson, Jr. To her children, she was truly the best mother anyone could wish for. Her love was unconditional, her support unwavering, and there was nothing she wouldn’t do for them. She would have gone to the moon and back for her children without a second thought. Whether offering encouragement, standing beside them through life’s challenges, or celebrating their accomplishments, Tyrese was always there. Her children never had to question how deeply they were loved.
One December 31, 2015, Tyrese married Jerry Matthew Cason. Their union brought two bonus children, Salena and Travis, into her life. Tyrese and Jerry shared a beautiful love and enjoyed traveling, dining out, and spending quality time together. Anyone who knew Tyrese knew she loved her some Jerry!
Tyrese was truly full of life, with a beautiful smile that could light up any room and an unforgettable personality. Warm, friendly, and loving, she had a way of making people feel welcome. She loved a good cookout, dancing, laughing, and her famous M&M cakes knows she had a special way of making family gatherings even sweeter! She knew how to enjoy life and made sure those around her enjoyed it too. Tyrese was strong, spirited and never afraid to speak her mind. While she was quick to share a smile or a laugh, she didn’t take any foolishness, and if you needed to be set straight, she had no problem getting you together!
One of Tyrese’s greatest joys was being a grandmother. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, making memories, and proudly sharing their adventures on Facebook. She posted about them so often that even people who had never met her felt like they knew her.
Tyrese leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband, Jerry Matthew Cason; her children Tyrese Lakia Harris (Zell), Candice Christina Franklin (Aaron), and Darryl Antonio “DJ” Johnson, Jr. (fiancée Sabrina); and her bonus children, Salena (fiancé, David) and Travis Johnson, Sr. (Desiree).
She was a proud grandmother to Noah, McKenzie, Makayla, and James, along with her seven beloved bonus grandchildren: Tatiana, T’zarah, Teegan, Tinsley, Travis, Jr., Aiden, and Zoriah.
She is also lovingly remembered by her siblings, Anthony Jackson, Sr. (Barbara), Kelvin Doane, Sr., (Sheila), Janice Brown, Charles Desmond, Jr., Kae Desmond, and Ivy Desmond; her brothers- and sisters-in- love, Leslie Adams, Russel Glover, Josephine Gaylord (Conrad), Elwood Cason, and Wesley Cason; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.
Tyrese was preceded in death by Edith Mae Brown, Benjamin Thomas Brown, Sr., Charles Desmond Sr., and her brother Benjamin “Buddy” Brown, Jr.
Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, October 23, 2026 11 AM, at the Pleasant View Baptist Church, of Port Deposit, MD. Visitation for family and friends will be held Friday October 23, 2026, 10 AM until 11 AM, prior to the funeral service. Interment will be in Berkley Cemetery, Darlington, Maryland.
