William Pringle Stewart, 85, was born February 20, 1926, in Port Deposit, MD, to the late Joseph and Margaret Stewart. He departed this life Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at his home in Port Deposit, MD.
Affectionately known as Billy, he graduated from George Washington Carver in Elkton, MD.
He was united in holy matrimony to the late Helen (Betty) Harris Stewart.
William (Billy) served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired from Aberdeen Proving Ground. He later worked for the post office in Port Deposit and also did lawn care on the side. He also loved to fish and hunt.
William (Billy) was a life member of VFW Post No. 6054 in Perryman, MD, the NAACP, and Masonic Lodge No. 48 in Havre de Grace, MD.
He loved the game of baseball and played for the famed Port Deposit Black Sox.
William leaves to cherish his memory daughters, Deborah Harris of Perryville, MD, Mary Ann Johnson of North East, MD, Marguerite Jordan (Paul) of Havre de Grace, MD; great grandchild, Sha-Quan Triplett, who he raised as his own; grandchildren, Michelle Harris, Deric Johnson, Marcella Oliver, Tyrisha Wanzer, Zakiya Jordan; 13 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; brother, Rev. Dr. Kenneth Stewart of Port Deposit, MD; sisters-in-law, Faye Hastings (Butch), Evelyn Love; brother-in-law, Leo Townley; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and devoted friend, Eleanor Gaylord.
William was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Stewart; parents, Joseph and Margaret Stewart; siblings, Clarence Stewart, Calvin Stewart, Alexander Stewart and Yvonne Stewart.
Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, December 20, 2011, 12 Noon, at the Bethel A.M.E. Church of Port Deposit, MD. Visitation for family and friends will be held Tuesday, December 20, 2011, 10 AM until 12 Noon, at the church prior to the funeral service. Interment will be in Mt. Zoar Cemetery, Conowingo, MD.
