Grace Ewing McDowell passed away Saturday, May 7, 2022. She was 94.
Grace was born October 25, 1927 on the Ewing family farm in Fair Hill. Her parents were the late Leon Vansant and Mabel Hilaman Ewing.
Grace graduated from Calvert High School in 1943 and graduated from Salisbury State Teacher’s College in 1947. Mrs. McDowell taught in the Cecil County Public School system at Rising Sun, North East, and Bainbridge Elementary schools. She taught at Bainbridge for most of her teaching career as a 3rd grade teacher. She retired from teaching in 1980.
Mrs. McDowell enjoyed cooking Sunday dinners for her family. She was always ready to entertain and show hospitality by preparing meals for friends of the family on very short notice.
Mrs. McDowell was a member of the Cecil County and Maryland State Retirement Associations and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. She was a member of the Hopewell United Methodist Church of Port Deposit, MD, for over 70 years. Mrs. McDowell’s journey and mission in life was that of a true disciple of Christ!
Mrs. McDowell is survived by her daughter, H. Elizabeth “Libby” McCullough (Allan) of Conowingo, MD; son, C. Ewing McDowell (Debbie) of Rising Sun, MD; four grandchildren, Joy Duke (Aaron) and Luke McCullough, James McDowell (Morgan) and Sarah McDowell; one great-granddaughter, Cora McDowell.
Mrs. McDowell was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Clayton Lee McDowell; two brothers and their wives, Albert Ewing (Mary Jane) and Warren Ewing (Jeanne).
The family would like to thank the All Care Assisted Living staff for their long-term care and kindness of “Gracie” as she was affectionately called by the staff and the Amedisys Hospice team for their short-term care of Grace.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, May 14, 2022, 11 AM, at the Hopewell United Methodist Church of Port Deposit, MD. Rev. John Groth will officiate. Interment will be in Rosebank Cemetery, Calvert, MD.
Following the interment, a luncheon/fellowship time will follow at Hopewell Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Hopewell United Methodist Church or to the Cecil County Retired School Personnel (CCRSP) Scholarship fund in care of Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, P.A., P.O. Box 766, Perryville, MD 21903-0766.
