Joseph William Griffin, of Perryville, MD, and Aberdeen, MD, died Saturday, December 23, 2017 surrounded by his wife, Susan, and daughter, Sandra. Born August 25, 1951 in Havre de Grace, MD, he was the son of the late William and Helen Cerney Griffin.

Joseph battled cancer for over 3 years and fought every step of the way right to the very end. In September 2017 metastatic cancer returned and he succumbed to pneumonia, fluid filled his lungs and he experienced carbon dioxide overload, as he fought the cancer.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Rodden; daughters, Sandra Espinosa and Helen Griffin; step-son, Brandon Rodden; five grandchildren; brother, John Murphy; and aunt, Virginia Fitch.

Joseph spent 10 years of his career as a Master Plumber. He was employed by Comfort Systems and Phillips Way. Prior to that he owned his own construction business and operated heavy equipment. During his career he enjoyed many opportunities including working for Harford County Division of Water & Sewer and the City of Havre de Grace.

Joseph was a generous man who loved to help others. He did not take anything for helping as he just believed that doing things for others was a requirement of human living. He volunteered for Habitat for Humanity for over a year until September 2017 when the pain from metastatic cancer was too great to continue.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Hospital for Children, Habitat for Humanity and the American Cancer Society in care of Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, P.A., P.O. Box 766, Perryville, MD 21903-0766.

A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, December 29, 2017, 6 PM, at the Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, P.A., Perryville, MD. Visitation for family and friends will be held Friday, December 29, 2017, 5 PM until 6 PM, at the funeral home prior to the memorial service. Pastor Dr. John M.R. Gauger will officiate. Interment will be private.
